The Power of ONE

When I began writing “The Opposite Of Poverty Is Friendship” all I had was a blank page.  The only two things I shouldn’t be thinking about were the only two things I thought about. “How the hell do I get from blank page to book?”  That fear and anxiety can be paralyzing. To me, “blank page” meant I had absolutely nothing.  It felt like somebody asked me to fill a swimming pool using nothing but a tea spoon to carry water.

But have you ever put a bucket under a leaky faucet to catch the drips?  By morning the bucket is overflowing with water. Yet the night before you were probably thinking; they’d legalize marijuana before that happens…no, wait!

4FeetIf you want to accomplish anything of significance in life don’t be fooled by the “mirage of the destination.”  We label these things “goals” but we put them on a pedestal and that makes them seem unattainable.   The trick is to not focus on the label, focus on the components only.  Do one thing at a time, piece by piece, brick by brick, one by one.  You’ve heard the saying “don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill” but I say, that’s exactly how a mountain is made.

The end like the beginning is only a marker, it’s the individual steps that happen in the middle that count.  Every step counts.  Every step you take moves you farther way from your starting point and closer to your ending marker, but the power is in the step. Just one step makes all the difference.

If you had one million dollars and decided to buy a candy bar for a dollar you would no longer be a millionaire.  That’s the power of “one”.   The magic is not in the “Million” the magic is in the power of “one” repeated.  Understand this and you will unlock the power to accomplish the most amazing things in your life.

Don’t try to write a book.  Write a sentence, then repeat it.  Don’t try to lose 50 pounds, lose one pound, then repeat it.  Don’t try to save a thousand dollars, save a dollar, then another.  That’s all a thousand dollars is.  That’s all a million dollars is.

Last year I began to apply this principal to everything.  It’s how I was able to write The Opposite Of Poverty Is Friendship.  I didn’t think about “book”, I just wrote sentences. On August 7, I put $20 in a savings account and said I would do that every day until the end of November.  My goal wasn’t the end amount, my goal was the one step, repeated.  So every day I accomplished my goal.  I checked back on November 30th and I had $2380 in my account. sweet!

Don’t think about how much it costs to go to college or how long it takes to graduate, they’re just markers.  Take the first class, pay for the first class.  Drip by drip, bit by bit, grain by grain, dollar by dollar, step by step, one by one.  That’s how EVERYTHING get’s done in this life.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

~ Aristotle
